Government seeks to legalize use of Propaganda on American People
Several congressmen are looking to pass an amendment that would once again allow the government to legally use propaganda on the American Public. The amendment would basically strike down two previous acts—the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 and Foreign Relations Authorization Act in 1987—that were passed to protect the American public from government sponsored propaganda.
Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) and Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash) are the two congressmen sponsoring this bi-partisan amendment that would allow the government to legally use misinformation campaigns on the American public. The amendment to this years $642 billion defense spending bill would “strike the current ban on domestic dissemination” and allow the government to legally use State Department and Pentagon sponsored propaganda campaigns.
Between the governments use of mainstream media to control the news to the government demonizing groups who they disagree with, this amendment is yet another example of their disdain for the American people. As it is, it’s hard enough to believe anything you hear or see on the mainstream news. If this amendment is allowed to pass, the flood gates of misinformation and propaganda will make it almost impossible to separate fact from fiction.
To put forth a bill that allows the government to legally lie to the American public is not only ridiculous, but it’s a slap into the face to the principles that this country was founded on.
