Phony Survivalist Bear Grylls Injured in the Wild

It was only a matter of time before Bear Grylls hurt himself, and now it looks like his dangerous stunts may have caught up with him. Discovery Channel has confirmed that Bear Grylls,  the controversial adventurer and star of  “Man vs. Wild”, has been injured during an expedition in Antarctica.

They are saying that he fell and injured his shoulder and is now on his way back home for medical treatment.

Hopefully this will be a lesson to all the would be survivalists who watch the show. What is shown on his popular series is not survival, but instead a bunch of choreographed stunts that could get you killed if you tried them in a survival situation. He has a huge amount of safety people right off camera, and has even been caught faking some of the scenes.

  1. I believe a person needs to research info for themselves and not just believe everything that the boob-tube says. Some things that BG says is true, this I know from other materials I’ve read and things I’ve experienced. Do I think that he knows all? Of course not. The show is entertaining and so is Survivorman, but information’s value is that which is proven and applicable.
Skills are learned by practicing. Nothing will work the first time you try it and sometimes the book makes it look a whole lot easier.(imagine that!) I think if you see something that might work, then try it before you need it.
I think that we all need to get out a little more and recirculate some old, useful and all-but-forgotten ways.

  2. I am considerate that Bear Grylls survival tips are exactly that, Survival techniques for when you have no other choice. This is not really portrayed correctly within the series and glorifies some of his culinary conquests as normal dietary requirements that can be tuck into when you so desired. There should be clear warnings that explain that the food choices should only be used when there no other distinct possibility of any other food source and that your life is in peril.
Eating some of the delights that Bear Grylls consumes during the series can potential kill you. For example the consumption of snails can lead to Angiostrongylus cantonensis this is not always lethal but eosinophilic meningitis is and all can be caught by eating ill prepare mollusks. Even eating the edible leaves such as lettuce which has had snails on them can contribute to this illness. Then there is the parasites that live in or on the meal that can cause serious illness. There need to be adequate warnings. I am not sure what Bear uses to protect himself from infestation of worms, larvae, bacteria, spores etc but he is very lucky to not become seriously ill from consuming these treats. You must understand also that the natives people who eat these treats regularly have done so for many years. This has probably caused the natives to develop a resistance or adaption to the culinary delights and the potential dangers. Who knows what the indigenous people do to purge themselves of these parasites. But this is not covered in the series. The series does offer serious solution to possible survival techniques. But this needs to be conveyed adequately so that people don’t believe they can tuck into any morsel found walking, crawling, flying. The Australian Aboriginals when collecting food have a saying. You have to have a strong stomach and constitution to survive Bush Food. You must be prepared to suffer stomach upset and being sick if you want to live on bush food.

    • Bear Grylls doesn’t give much in the way of survival advice, and he sure as hell doesn’t treat any of his situations as survival. Running and jumping around with a blatant disregard to his surroundings. And in some cases drinking his own urine? I’m sorry, but the last time I checked, that will make you VERY sick, and to top it off I’ve seen him countless times per episode break cardinal rules of wilderness survival and risk management just to make good TV. Also, he isn’t actually out there surviving. He’s sleeping in tents, and eating nice, warm food with his camera crew each and every night. He’s said it himself in interviews. So before trying to stick up for someone and say that they’re doing great with their survival show, look at it for what it is, and see that it’s nothing more than an over-produced action show.

  3. yeah bear grylls should try and explain every possible scenario of survival techniques with a detailed step by step instructions and going at the pace most people can follow(extremely fing slow). can you imagine how long the show will have to be to accomplish all that? and if ur gonna call him a phony for going out to extremely hazardous environments with backup safety measures, why not just root for him to die? because safety is for pussies right? not to mention how bear grylls must be in TOTAL CONTROL OF THE TV SHOW TO USE TRICKS OFF CAMERA. certainly the broadcasting company or their executives have no say in how the show should be run. what about the legal issues with allowing bear to be put in potentially fatal situations ON CAMERA? yeah make it authentic. make bear risk his life some more. who gives about laws anyways. at worst, the man is trying to make ends meet for himself and his family. im sure we’ve all seen people do alot worse for money. if u dont get this, then please… continue crying foul.

  4. Not sure why you have so much hate for Bear Grylls. He openly says that some of the scenes are set up. It’s an entertaining show and if you’re dumb enough to actually put yourself in the same situations then thats your problem. If anything he does a great job of showing areas of the world that most people would never be exposed to. Obviously he has safety people around him….It’s a TV show….It’s NOT real and he has never tried to say it is. Calm down off grid survival! If you don’t like him there is a very simple solution. Stop talking about him in internet article that everything can read and change the channel when his show comes up! You fuel his popularity when you talk about him. I like his show so for me it only helps so i guess thanks! Regardless of all that.. you have a pretty cool site. Just am opinion and thats all!

  5. Military survival techniques will not always be the same as what civilians learn. My dad was a USMC recon sniper that was later recruited for Navy SEALs. He taught me some of the techniques he learned while in training. Some of them were major don’ts in the civilian techniques but just the opposite for the military. Another I learned was a must if you can for the civilian but a huge no for the military. While I don’t know all the military techniques, some of the ‘fake’ or ‘bad’ advice people get from it is probably military style. My dad told me some of the techniques he was taught in USMC basics were not always the same as Navy SEALs training. Some of the techniques contradicted each other. Unless you know military and civilian techniques-both-, do not claim someone on a survival show a fake, especially when they make sure you know they are using what they learned in the military.
