As President Obama gets ready to appoint a successor, our constitutional rights to own a firearm are hanging in the balance. While the Supreme Court can’t unilaterally kill the second amendment, a left-wing activist court will be able to refine what the 2nd amendment means and push through all sorts of anti-2ndd amendment rulings — rulings that could severely limit our rights to own and carry a firearm.
Gun Rights will not Survive a Liberal Supreme Court
Most people don’t realize how close we have come to losing our right to own a firearm; in fact, over the last decade or so only one vote on the Supreme Court has stood between the anti-gunners and our ability to defend ourselves and our family. Take the 2008 case of District of Columbia v. Heller, a case that finally upheld an individual’s right to own a firearm, something left-wing activists argued was a “collective right.”
In the Heller case, the court deliberated the meaning of the Second Amendment for the first time in 70 years; deciding whether the Constitution protects an individual right to possess firearms or protects gun possession connected to serving in a state militia.
This case came down to a 5-4 decision; one vote coming between the anti-gun activists that want to take your rights, and our constitutional freedoms giving us the right to bear arms. I don’t think many people realize how close we are to losing our rights.
With the balance of the court now hanging by a thread, we could see a wave of anti-gun decisions; including the reversal of the Heller decision, and the reversal of the 5-4 McDonald decision which recognized that the Second Amendment applies to the states.
Will the Republican Party Protect our Second Amendment Rights?
While the current Republican candidates would like you to believe that they are the only thing standing between President Obama and our 2nd amendment rights, as we pointed out last week, Republicans have done just as much damage to our second amendment rights as the Democrats. Remember, it was the so-called pillar of the Republican Party Ronald Reagan who banned fully automatic firearms, helped push the Brady Bill, and helped push the original “assault weapons” ban.
We have a field of candidates who all talk a good game; but when you look at their actual records, and keep in mind past betrayals by the Republican Party, you really have to wonder just how committed they are to our actual freedoms. After all, these are the same people who for the last eight years promised to stop illegal immigration, eliminate Obamacare, and balance the budget. When considering the fact that they have the majority in both Congress and the Senate, and then look at how they have done nothing to defund the policies that they say they are against, how the hell can we trust any of them to protect our Constitutional rights?
