Intelligence reports issued by the U.S. government this week are reporting that 11 commercial jets may have been stolen by Islamic terrorists who took control of an airport in Libya late last month.
Officials are warning that the stolen airliners could be used in attacks later this month to mark the anniversary of the September, 11, 2001 attacks. This comes on the heels of a U.S. government bulletin warning that Islamic Terrorists were planning to attack the United States.
In response to what intelligence officials are calling “increased chatter” by terrorist groups around the globe, the United Kingdom raised their alert to ‘Severe’ and Prime Minister David Cameron told reporters that an attack was “highly likely.”
The Takeover of Tripoli International Airport
A coalition of Islamist and Misrata forces captured the Tripoli International Airport late last month, damaging at least thirty-four planes during the fighting. But now officials are worried about 11 aircraft that went missing during the attack.
U.S. intelligence agencies are not saying which aircraft went missing after the takeover of Tripoli International Airport in late August, but it is known that the state-owned Libyan Airlines fleet included seven Airbus 320s, one Airbus 330, two French ATR-42 turboprop aircraft, and four Bombardier CJR-900s. The Libyan state-owned Afriqiyah Airways fleet, which also operated out of Tripoli, was made up of 13 aircraft, including three Airbus 319s, seven Airbus 320s, two Airbus 330s, and one Airbus 340.
Many of the airplanes that were at the seized airport have the ability to make it to the United States, having a flight range anywhere from 1,500 to 6,500 miles.
How to Protect yourself from the Threat of Terrorism
We live in a world where the threat of terrorism, or being affected by some lone-lunatic hell-bent on creating chaos, is a very real possibility. While some choose to ignore the risks, blissfully walking through life denying the fact that evil exists, ignoring the problem does nothing to help prepare you to face the very real danger.
Be prepared to Evacuate: If things go bad, and a terror attack is launched anywhere near your city, it may be necessary to temporarily evacuate the area. This is especially true in the case of an attack that includes something like a dirty-bomb or bio-terror weapon.
Have a Bugout Bag: If you’re forced to evacuate, you want to have an emergency bag filled with everything you need to survive while away from home. This bag should be ready to go at a moment’s notice, and needs to be filled with items that fit your unique situation (medical conditions, area of the country, etc..).
Stay Alert: The best thing you can do is to stay alert, and recognize the threat exists. The simple act of staying aware of your surroundings, something known as situation awareness, is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your safety in any situation. Learn to trust your gut, and if something doesn’t seem right it may be time to head to safety.
Have enough Food & Water to make it through the Chaos: During even short-term natural disasters, the grocery stores in this country quickly sell out of necessities like food and water – sometimes in a matter of minutes. People simply aren’t prepared for disasters in this country, so the moment things go bad everything seems to fall apart. Having a two-week supply of emergency food and water will help ensure your safety, should an attack disrupt food delivery services or vital infrastructure.
