Was Doomsday Preppers used to convict another Prepper in Court?

A number of times in the past, I have warned about how dangerous I think T.V. shows like Doomsday Preppers are to the prepping community. In my opinion, these prepping shows do nothing to help people prepare and are designed to do only one thing – To make Preppers look like complete Wackjobs!

I hate to say I was right, but it seems the popular reality T.V. show about prepping is now being used to help obtain search warrants and convict preppers of crimes.

The case in question, involves a man from Kansas who was prepping for an economic collapse scenario. It seems law enforcement officials in Kansas used the T.V. show and images of preppers to not only obtain a warrant for a residents arrest, but also to convict the man of crimes in court.

Aflred Dutton, a military veteran and self-described prepper from Kansas, was convicted last month of making and storing explosive devices. While what he did may have been a crime, this story should serve as a warning to other preppers. USE YOUR RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT WHEN IT COMES TO PREPPING……The fact that you prep can and will be used against you in the court of law.

The Basis for the Search Warrants states:

Mr. Dutton, a military veteran, has been preparing for the economic collapse of the world. In addition to gathering a large supply of non-perishable items, he also has a modest collection of firearms and ammunition. And he makes fireworks.

During the trial, the prosecution played clips from the popular National Geographic Channel show, “Doomsday Preppers”. The prosecution used images of various “crazy ass preppers” from the T.V. show to successfully paint a picture of Mr. Dutton, as someone on the fringe of society that posed an extreme danger to his community.

When promos like this are used to promote the show, is there any question that prepping will be used against you?

  1. I am not sure i totally agree with all of this. I mean that video is surely strange and makes preppers look stupid. But the way i see it let people think you are crazy but keep it hidden enough that nobody really knows you are a prepper.

  2. This man from Kansas is not the first of the “Preppers” to have problems with law enforcement. Nor will he be the last….

Prepping in the open does two things. One, it compromises all your prepping… Two, it will almost 100% guarantee that you will be labeled to Wing-Nut…

People should do some research on what happens to preppers, and groups of preppers who are caught, and or labeled. It doesn’t end will in most cases.

    • If you prep you better keep a lid on it. Its not your goverment preppers should fear its doomsday predetors. I am not a prepper. So i stock piled some serious fire power and two vehicals. One “fast” one “large”. My intentions would be to raid a pharmecy and stay on the move looting “preppers”. I am not a “bad guy” I simply do what i know. My area is not condusive to prepping nor is my wallet. Ive been trained to adapt and improvise and thats how i will keep my wife and daughter safe and fed. There is a group of us and preppers need to stay underground or risk losing all your hard work.

      • Good luck keeping your wife and kids safe, even if you have a 50 cal turret welded onto a big@ss armored truck you and all of your friends are going to be murdered by the actual “bad guys”. If the SHTF seriously you are not going to mad max your way out of it, you will die just like 99% of everyone that decides to go on a violent looting rampage, probably at the hands of other people with the same idea as you. Crap like this makes me really sad…

      • Let’s just say you somehow do succeed in looting and keeping your family safe. One day you are going to run out of preppers to loot and realize there is no more food to steal and you have no idea how to obtain more. You will have kept your family safe only to watch them slowly die a miserable death from starvation. Save a few bullets. It might be more humane.

      • Bring it. I know the people I hang with are all vets. We will own you, take your stuff and share it with others. LOL

      • Preppers are going to have to live like the French Underground during WW2. I don’t care what you’re packing, you’re not going to survive walking around like Mad Max or the Lone Ranger. There is strength in numbers and in addition to getting our individual houses in order, we are going to have to form groups or tribes to ward off the have-nots coming after the haves…it’s how the human race has survived for millenniums..

      • Wow, you say you are not a “bad guy” yet you intend on robbing, and perhaps killing, honest people who have prepared? What if you had sacrificed to prepare to feed your children in an emergency and a bunch of looters came along and took it by force? You’d be in the right to defend your stores and kill the looters as difficult as that would be for “good guys.” I suggest that you find someone who has the room and some money that can prep and you barter or work for a place to bug out to rather than justifying the acts that you are planning.

        • Its Law of The Jungle when doomsday happens and u guys arent sure that he doesnt have a “base” where food is being grown and such

      • Just to let you know are an idiot, and if you actually spent 5 bucks on a case of ramen noodles & a case of water everytime u buy groceries instead of being the lazy P.O.S. that you are then you wouldn’t be in the situation your in… And if you even got close to my house and tried to “take” something from me or mine then I’d be stacking your body in the front of my house so the other pricks like you would know what happens when you act like the societal parasite that you are! Have a nice day and good luck!

      • I cant believe you are actually stupid enough to write this down. First you cannot be stupid enough to think you can run around shooting people and stealing their supplies. Second of all I dont want to hear the whine that you dont have the money when you just said you “piled serious firepower”. That takes money and if you have the money and time to pile ammo and weapons you can stock up on knowledge and food and water. your comment is so idiotic that I can only assume your trying to bring people out as a member of the government. If I was using my real name or a server that could be traced to me and not in another country I would not even respond to your stupid comment. But in the case you are serious I would love hear about it, I will think of you as I see the burning shell of your truck with your naked corps laying in the street.

        • I can’t believe this idiot has the nerve to say this!! And to be honest…He will get what’s coming to him if he even attempts to do what he’s saying! Need to watch what your saying dude!!

  3. Does anyone else feel like the government wants you helpless. I get so sick of the stereotypical way that anyone with guns, explosives, ammo, stock piles of supplies is somehow a threat to everyone else. I don’t know anyone like this that pose any kind of threat to anyone. They generally stick to themselves. I think that show was to make preppers looks crazy. It’s sad to think you can’t do all in your power to protect your family anymore without being persecuted by the left mainstream media.

    • Of course they do. We’re cattle to them. They’re not interested in us developing our “critical thinking,” that’s why they’re not big on education. They want dumb, loyal, hard workers to keep their action going. Watch what they come after next…our social security…they will demonize those that will endanger their existence by calling them “nutjobs” and “terrorists”…DHS has labeled Preppers as potential terrorists, while FEMA encourages people to stockpile for emergencies…WTF?

  4. I didn’t agree at first but now I do. I thought the show would be a nice “How to” with plenty of tips but it really is just another reality TV hit piece.

There was a mantra in the 40’s , “loose lips sink ships.”

Most preppers are preparing for an out of control government. Why then would anyone give their enemy a detailed layout of their “COMPOUND” (Christ I hate that word)? It is like daring them to raid you and they will for no other reason than the fact that they can and they will use their propaganda machine to paint you as a danger to yourself and others to justify any and all actions against you.

I guess the moral here is that when the government turns the crank on their hurdy gurdy in the form of state run television, DON”T BE THE DAMN MONKEY!!!!

    • My family served in the armed forces and one main thing that was taught to me was… “when it comes to fighting, or protection, don’t let the enemy know your strategy.” Stay in camouflage mode and keep the trap shut.

These shows were originally made to get a radar on the prepper/survival groups due to the Occupy movement. But unfortunately, the powers that be sugar coated the true agenda. Now we have more shows to contend with and infiltrate, Doomsday bunkers, and two others that are being produced. Not to help us, but to weed us out of the flocks. Keep an eye on those wolves for they will weed out the weak and unknowing straglers. Those weak are the ones who prefer their minute of fame but don’t see the concequences afterward.

  5. I don’t really know why people went on the show to begin with. Why would you want people to know? Guess where I’m going if something happens…to these preppers’ homes! I don’t understand why you would tell the whole world??

  6. Preppers have been around way before the tv show ever was. From the show, it helped open a common interest with so many are feeling. For that I belive its a good thing. If you have watched any of the episodes, you didnt see everything these preppers had. They even made that clear. Not to mention the show only showed whst they want. I learned this by having a dicussion from somebody who appeared on the show. However, every story shown you can find knowledge and information, to utilize for your gain. You are always going to have crazies, extremists in any group or category of interest. I personlly would rather somebidy be real, stand up with whag they feel is right and not hide behind closed doors to the publuc and our government. Dont we need people to stand up with they beleve in? Better yet help educate to those unknown with limited resources and knowledge?

  7. Ignore what the TV show was trying or not trying to do and read the story. That guy was building pipe bombs. He wasn’t arrested for a lot of guns or storing food he was bulding pipe bombs and blowing them up on national TV.

When I watched this particular episode I asked my wife if I had just seen that correctly, because in my eyes he pretty much signed the search warrant himself.

    • I don’t think the guy in this story was ever on the Doomsday Preppers Show. The guy you are talking about from the show was never arrested because the whole pipe bomb thing was staged event by the show producers. They were not real pipebombs but dummy props for the show. The guy on the show is know as Mr. Wayne this guy in the story is Aflred Dutton

REREAD THE STORY!!! The show was used to make him look crazy by showing clips of various preppers from the show.

  8. I have maintained from the beginning of this “show” that it was nothing but an attempt to try and snooker preppers into thinking that they had made the “big time”, and to come out more in the open — and thereby ID themselves to the gov’t thugs just waiting to go after such types.

Of course, I was right, and all of my friends who just *LOVE* the show are wrong. People are sometimes stupid beyond redemption.

  9. This is why I don’t say anything to anybody and I certainly don’t shop at any one specific place for my prepping needs. Always pay cash and use my garage to shield any visual from the public eye when unloading prep-ware. People just have to be smart about these things but unfortunately they aren’t. The way I see it is “whose business is it”? I think a lot of these people just want to be on t.v.

  10. I agree, the show is filled with a bunch of people who want to become famous and I doubt most of them are even really preppers. The whole show is staged by the producers and edited to make everyone look crazy.

You are also right on about paying in cash and never letting anyone know what you have.

  11. Anytime you go on a show and say you have got X amount of guns and X amount of ammo for an army, there’s gonna be knock at your door. If you don’t want people to know don’t go on a show and if you do go expect a knock at the door. Fallowed by words ATF we have a warrant

  12. I knew this would happen! I just knew they would turn this all around and go after these preppers, never trust Hollywood and never forget how much they are in bed with the government.

  13. Have any of you considered many of the DDAY preppers agreed to appear on the show to awaken the American people?….and it worked. The movement is growing daily by the thousands. Several that appeared knew they would be mocked and agreed to do it despite the blowback. Rather than being fearful about what the establishment tries to portray or impose, ban together. This type of article only perpetuates the fear and criticism. The movement is growing despite Hollywood’s failed attempts to mock… Why? Those that are awake and have half a brain see past the attempts. This blog is most likely monitored…your IP pinged when you posted your comments. Better shut it down — and not comment about anything! “They” will have you exactly where they want you. Silenced.

  14. ALWAYS SEEK THE FACTS> Mr. Dutton has been charged in the Superceding Indictment with knowingly possessing destructive devices, more fully described as five incendiary bombs (Count I) and nine grenades (Count II), in violation of 26 U.S.C. §§ 5841, 5845(a)(8), (f)(1), and 5861(d).

The source of information for the storage unit search warrant came from Joe Scott, Mr. Dutton’s ex-wife’s boyfriend. Mr. Scott often came to Mr. Dutton’s apartment to pick up Mr. Dutton’s daughter for her visitation. During these visits, Mr. Dutton and Mr. Scott discussed firearms, fireworks, and other explosives. There have been disputes between Mr. Dutton and his ex-wife Sabrina Dutton. Mr. Dutton testified that she sought sole custody of their daughter. Ms. Dutton testified that she did not seek sole custody of their daughter, but that she did request a temporary restraining order against Mr. Dutton after he threatened her.

  15. ya know i learned alot in my homeless dope addict days – – the govt can take away all my guns my property -my vehicles and a bunch of what ever stores and everything i got left –many would say your phucked at this point we;ll as long as i still have liberty and freedom to travel – i have the knowledge of “how to” i learned were to get cheap or free – and underground or black market – and i learned wear to get food – trnsportation -and also how to operate without cash or money – so when they swoop and im still free after – i will “ghost ” and disapear into the woodwork and – somewhere down the road apear as someoneelse somewhere else and have it together -thats what you learn when you lose everytrhing a few times over . im working on a book called “darker days survival – off of booktango .com it afr from ready – but it will show how a homless jobless person after financial disaster builds up from scratch and not only does this without a job – but also sets up a system to avaiod hard hits again -and when you have everything together -and “crap destroys and takes away eveything you can rebuild again and again and again legally and all without a 9-5 job – and all without goovt aid-wish me luck :}

  16. i think there’s something more damning in all this than whether or not preppers are considered nut-jobs or if the TV show clips are used against someone in court… issue goes far deeper and that is the assembly of case law against preppers in general… think about it, with enough case law behind them, tptb can make prepping illegal from every aspect making every one of us criminals… using TV only taints public opinion which in turn taints jurors decision-making… after all, they saw it on TV didn’t they??? so that makes it true… we’re a very dangerous “fly in the ointment” for them because while the masses of sheeple are included in the phrase “we, The People”, it’s “We, The Preppers” who live by that phrase… discredit and criminalize us and the sheeple will continue to follow the guberment pipers to the fema camps…

  17. SO glad that someone else gets it. Reality 101; “Prepping” isnt new…just the metro sexual word replacement for survivalist. (Nothing wrong with metro). They use a Jerry Springer type cross section of American public to boost interest while actually making fun of the folks they deem as “Preppers”. Or else its the slick up and coming business folks that are using this as a (semi) covert product placement. Think about it- a “prepper” that doesnt know basic firearms safety that Cub Scouts can recite?! Not carring any of his own first aid equip (but has a truck load of gear he sells on the internet). Look at all the product placements on many of the episodes. I’m not being negative…(There is NO room for that if your a survivalist.) Just want people to know DOOMS DAY PREPPERS is simply Jerry Springer and infomertials cleverly rolled into one. Its great entertainment..laugh, talk and have a great time with your family while watching it.

  18. That’s why you should never speak publicly about anything you do, especially if you’re a prepper. Do not post any videos or pictures online with your guns, ammo, food, precious metals, or make any kind of statements regarding anything. Keep things to yourself, keep your head down, and keep on prepping.
