Government trying to Prevent Kids from Working on Farms

Farm work has always played an important role in the lives of rural youth across America. In fact, in most rural areas working on a farm is often a kid’s first job. From milking cows and feeding livestock to harvesting crops in the summer, children often play a vital role in family farming.

But thanks to some over-zealous bureaucrats in the Obama administration, kids in rural America may soon be barred from performing traditional farm chores. And some in the farming community warn that these new rules, being proposed by various departments in the Obama Administration, could put some family farms in serious danger of failing.

New Federal regulations are being proposed that would bar children under the age of 16 from working on a farm owned by anyone other than their parents. The new regulations are so stringent that it would actually prohibit kids from working on any farm that wasn’t 100% owned by their parents. That means it would actually be illegal to help out on their own grandparent’s farm, even with their parent’s consent.

Family Farms Are not Immune.

The Department of Transportation is actually going right after Family Farmers. Their new rules would prohibit children under 16 from operating tractors, four-wheelers, riding mowers and other machinery, even on family farms. While some lawmakers seem to think these activities sound dangerous, what they fail to recognize is that farm work for these kids is not just work — it’s a way of life.

Many of them have grown up on these farms and play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of family farming. Without the ability to help their families, many of these farms will not be able to continue operating.

We have lost our understanding of rural life in this country, and if these new laws are allowed to take effect it will be a serious blow to everyone in the traditional farming community.

  1. Don’t take this out on the Democrats! Yes, it’s a complicated topic, because of course we would be hopping mad if a young kid got hurt, but yes, we want young kids to work and it’s critical to their moral, emotional and physical development. BUT, to use this (possibly misguided) effort as a reason to cast aside the Democrats, would be a mistake. With Republicans in charge, who will advocate for protections of any sort? Who will protect your 401K, or help you make a realistic wage, or put your out-of-work 25 year old child on your health care? Who will advocate for the future of our very existence on this planet? When you think about who to vote for, think about who stands for long-term sustainability, and who stands for short-term profits. Advocate for individual bills as you see fit, but don’t discard the Democrats who are trying to keep our system and our planet alive in the face of intense pressure to obstruct and pollute.

    • Yes because the Democrats have our best intrests in mind when they ruin things, and the Republicans are not any better.

I’m actually getting tired of the same old debates of Dem vs Rep It’s stupid. Our founding fathers did not have parties, George Washington was neither a republican nor a democrate, he was also not a libertarian, green party, liberal or any of the other stupid parties that have sprung up over the years. He was an American Colonist that wanted freedom from oppression, and he did not want the job of President either. He took it because someone had to. Why do we need to choose between these two political parties? Why should we care what these patries have to say? When I cast my vote, I vote for the American and this year I’m voting for Ron Paul, you all should too.

Sorry to attach this rant to your post Julie, but I have some qualms with your statement that I would like to address, the first of which is this: “Who will protect your 401K, or help you make a realistic wage, or put your out-of-work 25 year old child on your health care?”
One, you want a retirement plan? Take Dave Ramsey’s course Financial Peace University and do it yourself. Second, if your 25 year old kid is still living at home and unemployed, kick his butt out the blasted door, he’s an adult now not a child. If you’re such a bad parent that you couldn’t bother to teach him to stand on his own then you should be kicked in the butt as well.

I am so tired of everyone crying about the world not helping them, or giving them what they deserve, if you deserved it, you’d get off your tuckus and go out and get it yourself, like your supposed to and like this country’s founders did.

Day after day we all hear the about the 2 party system and how great it is, America was designd to be a 2 party system it was designed to be a system of people working for the greater good of all the American people. I’ve known very few politicians that could be trusted as far as I could throw them, but there are those that I would vote for because I know what their goals are, and those goals are to help America be a great nation again, instead of being a bully that feels the need to micro manage the rest of the world. Government needs to stay out of the business world, stay away from our families and do it’s job to ensure our safety from outside oppressors. We the people will take care of the rest. National defense, there are plenty of armed civilians that would easily repell any foreign aggressors that were brave (or stupid) enough to set foot on our soil. Illegal immigration? I view that as an invasion of our territory and we should treat them the way the Indians treated the first settlers, meeet them with weapons and death, that’ll stop them from wanting to be here. Yes I am okay with execution as a form of punishment for illegal immigrants, I am also a fan of deportation of prisoners into an uninhabitad jungle with no provisions, no clothes and no hope of survival, that’ll really lessen the tax payers burden. I know you will all call me a nut job, conspiracy theorist and probably picture me sitting at home in a dark room wearing a dirty bathrobe and a tin foil hat, the truth of the matter is that I’m usually wearing a suit with a concealed pistol and you have no idea who I am. We spend more money helping other countries and feeding the criminals than we do trying to balance our budgets and advocate for people to fend for themselves. I’m tired of it, bring back public executions, bring back weak federal government and strong state governemt and by God bring back the rights of the people to govern themsleves and shoot the electorial college.

thank you for reading my rant, if I’ve offended anyone’s sensitivities (well, then you don’t belong on this site in the first place) but I’m not sorry.

  2. hell yea….keep them dumb an stupid and depending up on the govt.s welfare system………the youth of this world.. had better learn how to grow plant an raise live stock ..or starve your choice people

  3. I grew up helping my friends on their family ranch and in 4-H. The lessons I learned and the experiences have helped me in many situations. How can you take that away from American young people. If I ever have to go to a nursing home I would much rather have a person who took care of animals take care of me than one that sat on their rear and played video games!

  4. I realize that I have never worked on the farm, but my grandparents grew up on their family farms, working since they were able to walk in order to help out the family. This is the way the older generations lived, anyone that survived the great depression knows what it is like to work hard for everything they have with no help from the government. We all need to take some lessons from the past, because if you can’t learn from the past you are doomed to repeat it.

We are heading into a great financial crisis, an economic disaster of unfortold devastation. Is anyone prepared for that? Are those of you living on welfare or unemployment really prepared to deal with the lack of assistance from others? I know plenty of preppers that will help any who come to them for help, in return for their help in labor of some kind to keep things fair, organized and cicil. If anyone showed up expecting to be helped for no effort, we’d probably toss them out in the cold (other, more zealous people might just shoot them saying the loss of the bullet is worth the air we’d gain). You have to think to the future at all times, live today to the fullest for tomorrow is not promised. Playing video games all day is not living to the fullest, it’s not even really living.
