In what many in the military are calling an unprecedented attack on our military, 200 Marines at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan were forced to disarm and leave their weapons outside of the camp. The orders were given to 200 Marines who were gathered to hear U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta speak.
This is a very troubling story! Normally the Marines are always supposed to have their weapons with them in a war zone. And in the past they have always been allowed to keep them no matter who was speaking. And why wouldn’t they – they are supposed to be the ones protecting these political figures in the war zone.
According to local reports, a Sergeant Major abruptly told the Marines who were waiting to hear Secretary Panetta speak to get up and remove their weapons. They were then forced to leave their weapons outside, including M16 and M-4 automatic rifles and 9 mm pistols, and return unarmed.
The sergeant major, Brandon Hall, told reporters he was just acting on orders.
“All I know is, I was told to get the weapons out,” he said. Asked why, he replied: “Somebody got itchy, that’s all I’ve got to say. Somebody got itchy; we just adjust.”
In my opinion, this is an insult to every Marine that has been asked to put their life on the line for this country. To think that our government would force anyone in the military to disarm is almost beyond belief. To put it into context, it would be like asking your local police department to disarm when a local dignitary was in town.
These are the people who are supposed to be “the protectors”…. the fact that the government has now signaled they don’t trust our military is very troubling.
