Social Monitoring Program to Determine who can Own Guns being Proposed: Trump Admin Considering Using Amazon, Google and Apple Data

Government monitoring social media

According to a report from The Washington Post,  the White House has been briefed on a potential new government agency named ‘HARPA.’ This agency, in turn, would monitor social media posts, data collected by smart home devices, and even data from wearable data devices like FitBit.

A copy of the plan obtained by the Post characterizes HARPA as pursuing “breakthrough technologies with high specificity and sensitivity for early diagnosis of neuropsychiatric violence” and claims that “a multi-modality solution, along with real-time data analytics, is needed to achieve such an accurate diagnosis.” The data would be obtained through technologies like Apple Watches, Amazon Echo, and Google Home.

For those that didn’t catch that, that means data collected from devices that spy on American’s private conversations will be used to monitor behavior and strip Americans of their 2nd amendment rights.

According to the Washington Post, Trump has reacted “very positively” to the idea of using this data to determine who can own a gun.

“Though the proposal is starting as a voluntary data collection scheme allegedly aimed at finding warning signs of mental illness, we all know so-called “voluntary” government programs often become mandatory at the drop of a hat,” says Chris Menahan.

HARPA, or the ‘Health Advanced Research Projects Agency,’ would be modeled after the government’s defense research agency, DARPA. HARPA would become part of  the Health and Human Services Department and have a director appointed by the President. It would have its own budget, too, says the Post, citing three sources “with knowledge of conversations around the plan.”

First proposed in 2017 by The Suzanne Wright Foundation, HARPA is being sold as an agency that will “drive innovation in biomedical research.”

The Suzanne Wright Foundation approached the Trump administration recently and proposed the agency include a project called Stopping Aberrant Fatal Events by Helping Overcome Mental Extremes, or Safe Home, the report notes.

Geoffrey Ling, the lead scientific adviser on HARPA, told reporters the plan would require enormous amounts of data and “scientific rigor.” He added: “Everybody would be a volunteer. We’re not inventing new science here. We’re analyzing it so we can develop new approaches.”

Bob Wright, who founded the Suzanne Wright Foundation is a close personal friend of President Trump. Wright sees Ivanka Trump as the most effective champion of the proposal and has previously briefed her on HARPA himself, Wright said.

“It would be perfect for her to do it — we need someone with some horsepower — someone like her driving it. … It could get done,” said one official familiar with the conversations. “We’d be able to put every resource of the federal government, from the highest levels of the scientific community to say: ‘This is how people with these problems should be treated and have limited access to firearms.’ ”

This is truly some scary stuff! While die-hard Trump supporters will yet again dismiss this and claim it’s just Trump playing 4D Chess, just as they did with the Bump stock ban, and the nomination of an Anti-gun advocate to the ATF, gun owners need to keep a serious eye on what’s going on here – especially with so many Republicans now jumping on the gun control bandwagon.
