Fishing Knots – The Clinch

tying a clinch knot

The Clinch knot is one of the most popular fishing knots, and is often one of the first knots a young fisherman will learn. It’s a quick and easy knot to learn, and if done right is extremely reliable in most fishing situations. While I wouldn’t use it on newer braided lines, it is good for both mono and fluorocarbon lines.

Here is how to tie a Clinch Knot for Fishing

Clinch Knot
  1. Thread the line through the eye of the hook, swivel or lure head.
  2. Bring the line back and make at least five turns around the line.
  3. Bring the line though the loop formed behind the eye, and then bring it through the big loop.
Fishing knot
  1. Wet the knots and pull on the end to draw up the coils.
  2. Pull the standing line to form a knot.
  3. Slide tight against the eye and clip any extra line.

  1. Also, another knot to look at is the grinner or uni knot. I find it a lot easier to tie, especially when you have cold hands or are exhausted because it’s much less fiddly.
