2,000 residents have fled the town of Los Alamos as a gigantic wildfire threatens to reach the Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratory. The laboratory, birthplace of the atomic bomb, has over 20,000 barrels of nuclear waste that are sitting in a makeshift fabric type building.
What else is in the lab isn’t clear, but we know they are responsible for maintaining the nation’s nuclear warheads and it’s reported that they have a team of biological technicians who work at the facility. The EPA has sent in air monitoring teams and a plane that is equipped to detect radiation has now started flying over the area.
The fire is 0% contained and as of this morning had made its way to the edge of at least 2 sides of the property.
