Maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude during a Survival Situation

The ability to maintain a positive mental attitude during a survival situation is something that needs to be taken seriously. It’s also something that you need to start working on now, before the SHTF.

Making it through a survival scenario often comes down to how well you can control your emotions. Keeping a positive frame of mind, even in the face of an unthinkable threat, will help you process what’s happening and will help you respond without giving into fear.

Now I’m not suggesting that you ignore the dangers or take on some delusional view of what’s going on. But I am suggesting that you need to keep a level head, regardless of your circumstances. In a survival situation griping about your circumstances or wallowing on your problems will do one thing, IT WILL GET YOU KILLED!

In a Survival Situation, you need to be able to work on solutions, not wallow in self-pity. Every obstacle that you face will likely present a solution – if you have a level head and can look for it. If you spend all your time crying about the problem, the opportunity to survive will pass you by.

The Work Starts Now

The most important thing to remember about mastering your emotions is that it takes time. While it only takes a second for fear and anger to invade your mind, it can take years to really master the ability to tune these emotions out during a stressful situation.

Being able to maintain a positive attitude in a stressful situation takes practice. It’s not an easy thing to master, but once you do it will be well worth the effort.

How to prepare your mind for survival:

  • Prepare yourself for Battle– People who are prepared and know what to expect during an emergency situation are far less likely to fall into the grips of depression and fear. The more you train, the better you will be able to respond both physically and mentally to a stressful SHTF situation.
  • Practice Relaxation Techniques – Learning how to relax in a stressful situation is crucial to your survival. Deep breathing techniques, stretching, studying positive attitude, and other relaxation techniques are valuable skills that you should learn.
  • Manage your Fears – Fear is a natural part of life and something that has been hard-wired into our DNA to help us survive. A Survivalist needs to learn how to control his anxiety to ensure his survival in any situation.

  1. An idea on a survival mindset is to do a worse case scenerio mindset/planning. That’s the way I was trained in the Army regarding planning. If you’ve planned for the worst, everything else is better. Also, remember what happened in 1929 when the Stock Market crashed. The number of suicides was alot, and this was people who reacted before even trying to cope with the problem.

    • First I want to thank you for your service! Veterans do not get the thanks they deserve. Next I want to apologize for what’s next. As an historian I feel the need to point out that on the day of the stock market crash in’29 there were no reported suicides directly related to it. Again I apologize for correcting you but I am kind of anal about history (okay, not kind of, but anal).

  2. I disagree withthe whole ‘positive mental attitude’ thing. While I understand where the article is going, and I agree with the thrust of it, I prefer a gritty realism. The old ‘plan for the worst, hope for the best” saying is a good one. IMO you need to strength of will to endure and never give up, but you will be better served by a pragmatism and some black humor. Pointless positive mental attitude ‘happy clappy’ is just irritating.

    • Max, people like you are the ones that are irritating. Constantly painting the worst picture possible is actually inviting that to happen. And you obviously don’t know a thing about having a positive mental outlook. Throughout my life I have done my best to avoid negative people like you… you are a drag.
I wish you luck in going through your life and I hope it’s good in spite of your negative outlook.
