Radiation detected at U.S. Airports

WBBM Newsradio 780 in Chicago is reporting that radiation has been detected at O’Hare Airport on passengers arriving from Tokyo. The passengers triggered radiation detectors while being screened by Customs.

The Chicago Aviation Department said they are adding additional screening procedures as precautionary measures.

Homeland Security would not comment on the situation in Chicago, but officials at California’s LAX said that DHS is stepping up screening efforts. Radiation was also detected on passengers arriving at Dallas-Fort Worth and the aircrafts cabin filtration system tested positive for radiation.

  1. I hope that because of these horrible events in Japan, that the idea of eventually having safe, clean and reasonably priced electrical energy generated by nuclear reactors is not dead. It is though we do not consider the potential dangers when we site such plants so close to shore and so close to a major quake producing fault line just offshore.

I like the idea of smaller, modular nuclear power generators, such as the HYPERION POWER GENERATION MODULE. We must not “throw the baby out with the bathwater.”

  2. I remember studying about nuclear fallout in the 1970’s, it wasn’t a very pretty picture when I realized these nuclear bombs, nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants will be exposing mammals to ionizing radiation for hundreds of years.

So I believe the whole nuclear power plants, reactors etc. is a mental health issue. And it will be seen in the future what the ionizing radiation is going to do to future generations. It definitely damages DNA, causes cancer etc. especially the gamma rays. I now realize most of the people really have no education or knowledge about ionizing radiation and I believe if they did, if more documentaries were made and shown about ionizing radiation people would stand up against anymore nuclear power plants being produced and demand safer cleaner alternatives!

  3. Wow ! I live less than 1 hour North West of Chicago in WI.. Things are so screwed up any more ! I wish I could live off the grid in the Rockie Mountains and be free for the rest of my life ! I still can’t understand why some of the smartest people on the planet would build a nuke plant in such a geologically unstable area ? Just blows my mind !!!!!

  4. If nuclear energy is safe why will no private insurers cover it?If nuclear energy is so cheap what is the cost of containing the waist for eons? The people will pay for these things with their money and their health and the future effects will continue for generations.Until the technology exists to make it safe it is simply trading one problem for another that is worse.research should continue but no further dependence on nuclear power should be tolerated by the people who pay these costs in the end.Make it illegal until then!
