Gun Control & Gun Bans

Pistol

One of the arguments you always hear from those who are against gun ownership, is that we need more laws to protect people from guns. You often hear them use buzz words like “high-powered” “cop killers” or “large capacity clips” to scare the public into thinking that we need more gun laws.

Do we really need more laws, or do we need to enforce the ones that are on the books?

There are already a numerous “Gun Laws” on the books

You must be 18 years of age to buy rifles and shotguns and 21 years old to purchase a handgun. This law also covers the purchase of ammunition making it illegal for anyone under 18 to buy long gun ammo and anyone under 21 to buy handgun ammo.

It is illegal to sell a gun that has its serial number removed, changed, or missing.

If someone buys multiple firearms in a single purchase, an official record is made to notify the ATF

It is illegal to sell or manufacture ammo that is explicitly made to shoot through body armor.

It is illegal for the following people to own firearms: felons, those convicted of domestic violence, mental defectives, citizens who renounce their citizenship, anyone who has been dishonorably discharged from the military, those addicted to any controlled substance, and illegal aliens.

And these are just a small number of the gun laws that have already been passed by congress. The list doesn’t take into account the many local and state laws that also prohibit where, when, and how you can carry a weapon.

What about gun safety?

This is another area that is often used by the media to scare people into thinking that “guns are bad.” But what do the actual numbers show?

  • According to the National Safety Council, accidental gun fatalities are at their lowest level since 1903.
  • Since 1930, the number of guns has quadrupled while the number of accidental gun related deaths has dropped by 80%.
  • In the U.S. guns cause 0.5% of accidental deaths, compared to motor vehicles which cause 37% …. Should we ban cars?

Do Gun Bans make people safer?

If gun bans worked then cities like Chicago and New York would be utopias where crime has been wiped out and everyone skips through the streets giving each other high fives.

But what really happens when a city bans guns?

1966  New Jersey – New Jersey passes a law which local politicians call “the most stringent gun law” in the nation.
Results: Murder rate up 46%; Robbery rate doubles.

1976 Washington, D.C. – One of the most restrictive gun laws in the country goes into effect.
Results: Murder rate up 134%

1982 Chicago – City of Chicago passes a ban on handguns.
Results: Murders committed with handguns up 40%

1986 Maryland – Maryland passes a law banning small, inexpensive handguns knows as Saturday night specials.
Result: Murder rate increases by 20%

2005 Morton Grove Illinois – Morton Grove becomes the first city in Illinois to approve a gun ban for anyone other than police.
Result: The Cities crime rate jumps by 15.7%.

Do less restrictive Gun Laws make people safer? Let’s look at those numbers.

1987 Florida – Florida passes right-to-carry law
Result: Murder rate down 21%

1996 Texas – Texas passes right-to-carry law
Result: Murder rate  30% lower than before the law was passed.

2001 Michigan – Michigan passes right-to-carry law
Result: Murder rate down 4%.

And what did the Founders have to say?

“A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.”
— George Washington

“Americans have the right and advantage of being armed — unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.”
–James Madison

“The great objective is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able may have a gun.”
–Patrick Henry

“To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.”
George Mason

“And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms… The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
–Thomas Jefferson

“The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.”
–Thomas Jefferson

“The Constitution shall never be construed….to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms”
Samuel Adams

“To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms, and be taught alike especially when young, how to use them.”
Richard Henry Lee

We should not forget that the spark which ignited the American Revolution was caused by the British attempt to confiscate the firearms of the colonists.
Patrick Henry

“Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence.”
George Washington

  1. I am an X-NRA safety instructor and holder of 2 national small bore championships.don’t mess with me or my friends and family and you’ll be ok, if you do I pity your knees first.even a .22 can make a mess! and the 9mm or .357 envolved in the situation makes things REAL ugly…
‘They’ will have to remove my gun from my dieing hand if ‘They’ want it…I would not harm to own it,but I would die defending anything I believe in…

  2. CONNIE said; “I don’t care what your numbers say I hope they outlaw them and anyone who has one should be put in jail.”
So, in other words, it doesn’t matter what the facts are, your emotional, irrational hoplophobia must rule the rest of us rational sane people out here because YOU are afraid of guns.
Wow! Now, does anyone wonder why these fruitcake liberals are a danger not only to freedom but to civilization in general?
CONNIE… A CHALLENGE TO YOU: If you are so avidly anti-gun and unassumingly so proud to be that way, why don’t you take this challenge… POST A SIGN IN YOUR YARD AND ON YOUR DOOR THAT PROCLAIMS YOU ARE ANTI-GUN AND YOU OWN NO GUNS NOR WOULD YOU USE ONE AGAINST ANYBODY! Please! I am tired of MY GUNS and MY WILLINGNESS TO USE THEM AGAINST CRIMINALS from deterring an intruder from breaking in to YOUR home! Seriously, PUT UP THE SIGN OR SHUT THE F#@K UP! You idiot liberals serve no purpose but to be victims to the criminal element so please do BOTH of us a favor and put up those signs and await the rapist/murderer to take you out of the food chain! Please! I have no sympathy or empathy to people like you so do the world a favor and deal the hand of fate and boast proudly your hoplophobic condition and put up the goddamn sign!

  3. connie…. new plain of action we the people have the arms ..we the people make the rules … and by GOD we the people shall place everyone that doesn’t own a fire arm in JAIL…….

It is killiansredbeer at gmail dot com.
If you don’t like guns or the idea of being armed, don’t bother me.

  6. Well I am with everyone besides Connie. To tell the truth I am young prolly younger than everyone on this blogsite I also have a young family a son and daughter. Well it was actually my wife that suggested we get a firearm for our home so we went out and purchased a couple of them she has the cheap but reliable hi point 995 carbine and I have the new tactical mini 14. And since I have got those firearms I have slept better at night knowing my family will be safe if there was an intrusion of our home. So to say that people shouldn’t have the right to own guns is ridiculous Connie now come on if someone broke in with the intentions of harming you and ur family what would be ur defense hopefully not playing opossum. Just saying

  7. I bet Im younger! Beat 15! Just kidding with you Lorenzo, but at this age I have already shot an ak47, 9mm, 40s&w, british sniper rifle .308, ar15 tactical,30-06,BARRET 50 CAL.! and of course a .22. Bottom line is this. Guns is what makes this country great and its People great. But then again our government is 2 faced.

  8. Its our politicians that are slowly taking our rights away. Politicians dont know jack **** about guns, and they put stupid federal laws like the Firearms Owner’s Protection Act 0f 1986 the gun control act of 1968 and the imported assault weapons ban of 1989, now here are a few things I want to get straghten up:

    1. An Assault Rifle is any weapon thats gas-operated, fully automatic and that fires rifle cartridge. If an assault rifle is semi-auto only then its NOT an assault rifle.

    2. the FOPA of 1986 prevents the ownership of full-autos manufactured on and after the ban. Did that do any good? NO. There’s was the 1997 North Hollywood bank heist the deadliest bank robbery ever known to occure. also, this made the price for MGs skyrocket, each time a pre-86 machine gun is transfered the price goes up making it harder and harder for gun enthusiasts to buy full-autos, I know that full-autos were intended for military use ever since the Gatling first went to service.

    3. importing assault weapons ban of 1989 (or whatever they call it) Its obvious that politicians just want every gun in the nation away from civilians, they even tried to ban ALL semi-autos in 1994 whether if it was imported or american-made. the one that took place in 1994 never passed and thank god for that.

Politicians dont understand how guns are important to the people, and thats because politicians have bodyguards armed to the teeth protecting their sorry behinds. They must think that everone can afford to hire bodyguards. If we can protest and vote for the right people. we might have a chance of removing these bans. Because George Washington won his rights not by speech but by shooting the brits. And what prtects the 1st Amendment is the 2nd Amendment.

  9. And if im gonna have to turn in my gun right after a ban occured, after legally paying hard earned money for it, then their gonna have to do it the hard way, and I guarantee that wont be easy….

And I know MGs are meant for killing human beings, but I believe we should have the right to own machine guns if we want to, a machine gun is as deadly as a pistol or a semi-auto rifle, it just depends on the person thats using it. the government just wants people to pay more money, the criminals literally have more rights than we do, and its rediculous!

  10. Well I am young too, I just have been raised by an old man. I believe Guns is what Americans need , Its like, I do believe we should have the right to own MG’s but if we could get it so could some punk on the street, and i know how much we all want Gangsters with fully-auto AK’s.

  11. ztar@ well, criminals have any gun a new out of the box machine gun, or even an RPG. As with gangs with aks we already have those problems, the point is crimials can get whatever they want regardless of the law if we can get mgs that doesnt mean that criminals can, because they already have them. Criminals dont go to register for a class 3. They can just get it from the nearest gun-smuggler at a very low price. while an old vietnam era M60 would cost you $30,000 + $200 transfer fee, and months of background checks, and hassles.

  12. @ Luis…..this is true….I love the M60’s , but I don’t think i will ever own one. I have been raised around guns most of my life. I Love machine guns, I just love guns in general, that’s just one reason I want to join the marines in the near future. But i live in gang territory, not willingly, I hate living in the city. But you know , i don’t feel safe to go to the park just a few hundred yards outside my front door. and i do believe gun prices are ridiculous. for a decent one any way. and you know since i was raised in the country…or whatever you want to call it, I hunted a lot. but the hunting regulations in some states are idiotic .

  13. Ztar@ If I were in a situation like that id apply for a concealed carry permit. I really hope you get out of that neighborhood, thats not a good place to be, or you can take a stand and do whatever it takes to survive, legal or illegal, do whatever it takes to survive, if a gang member is tresspassing into your property trying to do harm, or intimidate you, kill em I say, i mean you do have hunting weapons right?

  14. Listen up BOOTS!!!! The feds r gonna ban ownership of any weapon and make it a terrorist act if u r caught with 1. This is so they then can seize all ur property as well. So as long as u idiots out there keep voting for those criminal in DC and ur State criminals as well…ur fuked!!! There needs to be a strong message sent and its not going to be pretty. I just want to know what army they are gonna send to confiscate your weapons. I don’t believe sons n daughters, brothers and sisters are gonna start shooting at the family folks during a confiscation raid and there is resistance!!!

Hmmmm u may want to start thinking about that real seriously. The UN is looking to force a ban worldwide. U know the commie in DC is going to enforce it. So what do you do??

What military force will be brought in to enforce it??? Don’t know bout u folks but if I were still living in the USA…it’d be a bloody shootout trying to get my stuff. I may die but I’ll take a bunch with me….YES I WILL!! Thank u for the special forces training u gave me years ago. I’d be using everything I learned against those assholes.

Enuf from me I’m starting to get worked up a bit.

    Oh yeah…Connie, F off biatch…u moron!!!

  15. @ Luis, yes I have hunting weapons, never considered killing anyone with it, but you know i don’t usually have to worry, I do get scared for that fact we have a gang in the neighborhood, but They usually stay out if you have NRA stuff on your vehicles. My friends think of me as a gun geek. and I am still in school, i’m just waiting to graduate, then I’m probably joining the military. I always lived in the city, but i have spent more time in the woods than other people do.

  16. thank you all for youre comments on wanting to carry firearmsand having them why don’t some off you run for president if youre campaign is good then i’d vote for you and that one dumb bitch at the top. you know if someone breaks into my house trys to kill my kids and rape my wife and this is like worst case secnario(cause they would be dead before they walk in)then that person is going to die when you bring a gun into a situation and intended to do harm to others then you’re going to have to live with that fact and you need to die. i believe justice comes in 3 to 6 round burst i hope you all stay safe and protected

  17. Enforce the laws already on the books. Every person should have the right to own a weapon to protect themselves, family and property and LEGALLY!

  18. I love the barrage of quotes at the end.
I wish those were on the walls of our local schools along with the
    Bill of Rights…

  19. Problem is gun rights are taken away a little itty bit at a time so there is no chance of a rebellion or armed resistance. In canada, we’ve been trained to let the government take whatever it wants without much resistance, wooses I’d say. The US residents better watch every little change in gun laws and fight them tooth and nail right away or it’s going to be like the frog in hot water. Btw, your right in the US have been seriously weakened with this terrorist crutch that now the army can hold one of it’s own citizens without charge for terrorist related bullsquid. Man, that law just came in… watch out, the commi ideas aren’t far behind!!!! God bless you guys.. I love the US.

    A Canadian friend
