Outdoor Tips – Blister Control

Although they may seem like only a small nuisance, believe it or not blisters have stopped many a hikers in their tracks. They are often one of the most painful and annoying conditions that you’ll face out on the trail.

Worn out Hiking Boots

From wearing the wrong socks to wearing shoes that don’t fit, there are a number of things that can cause blisters to become a problem out on the trail. But beyond just wearing the right hiking boots and socks, there are a few preventative hacks you can take to stop blisters in their tracks.

  • Baby your feet: If your problem is coming from excessive moisture, try sprinkling some baby powder or cornstarch on your feet before putting them in your socks. Both of these powders can help keep your feet free of moisture, something that is important when trying to stop blisters from forming.
  • Lube them up: Petroleum jelly or even chapstick can help prevent friction from causing problems. If you feel a hot spot, try putting a bit on the affected area before you continue your hike.
  • Duct Tape to the Rescue: Instead of buying expensive moleskin products, try a bit of duct tape as a preventative measure on blister-prone areas.
  • Pay attention to the way you walk. A lot of foot related problems come from the way we walk. If you continue to have foot problems while out on the trail, you may want to talk to a podiatrist about how you’re walking.
  • Cut those Toenails: Your toenail’s should be trimmed so they don’t irritate your other toes.
  • Air out your feet: If you’re on a long hike, take time to rest, air out, and stretch out your feet.
