Our ever so helpful government has decided that your wood burning stove is now a danger to the world. In another attempt to outlaw the off grid lifestyle, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the same agency that was recently caught using drones to spy on Americans, is now going after home owners who use Wood Burning Stoves to heat their homes.
Shortly after the re-election of President Obama, the agency announced new radical environmental regulations that threaten to effect people who live off the grid. The EPA’s new environmental regulations reduce the amount of airborne fine-particle matter from 15 micrograms to 12 micrograms per cubic meter of air.
This means that most wood burning stoves would now fall into a class deemed unacceptable under these new draconian measures. The EPA has even launched a nifty new website called burn wise to try to sway public opinion.
On their site, while trying to convince people to get rid of their old stoves and buy the new EPA-certified stoves, they state that these older stove must be scraped, and cannot be resold.

The local air pollution agency says I can’t sell my old wood stove to help pay for an EPA-certified wood stove. Why is that?
Replacing an older stove with a cleaner-burning stove will not improve air quality if the older stove is reused somewhere else. For this reason, wood stove change out programs usually require older stoves to be destroyed and recycled as scrap metal, or rendered inoperable.
Let’s hope this doesn’t fall under the jurisdiction of the newly created Department of Homeland Security Environmental Justice Units. The next thing you know we might all be getting a knock at the door….. Your Neighbor reported that you might be burning some wood, do you mind if we take a look around?
So how does this affect fireplaces. are they going to outlaw those and firepits next.
Several counties in Western Washington state have declared using you homes’ fireplace is illegal, all that CO2 crap n’ bullshit. Doesn’t matter if it’s 15 degrees outside and the power is out with a foot of snow on the ground. Your local officials are equally as dangerous folks.
This seems like anti EPA hype. It also seems like nonsense. Its legal to use any kind of wood stove you want, and will continue to be. You just cannot get tax credits for it or resell ones that you do get credits for. Local government ordinances can require a particular compliance, insurance can require it, being a careful consumer can make you want a non polluting wood stove. This article is just feeding fears and hostility to protections we all rely on to keep the air and water clean. Off Grid folks need to be careful too, and wouldn’t want to start having their neighbors burn coal or set up a dirty wood stove downwind.

And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shitty jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street, and you know something? They’ll get it. They’ll get it all from you sooner or later cause they own this fucking place! It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it! You, and I, are not in the big club.

I have a masonary fireplace and when it burns all the heat of the house is sucked up the chimney, very little heat actually enters the house, it was soothing to watch, but that was about it. The fireplace also poured smoke out and was terribly inefficient. I purchased my EPA-2 woodstove last year. I didn’t get a tax rebate, but I wanted a something which would make a difference in my heating bill. But it was my choice and it was quite expensive to upgrade. For those on a fixed budget who are using the fireplace or woodstove to heat their homes, an upgrade may not be possible – and this is just one more example of a federal government which has gone tyrannical.
In my city we had three government buildings constructed in 2011-2012. One was a county office building, one was a local city building, and the last was a federal building. The county and city buildings are easily accessible, very little security and easy to get in and see who needs to be seen. But our new federal building has one way drive ways with road spikes if one backs up or goes the wrong way, concrete posts all along the perimeter, guards at the parking facility, cameras inside and outside, a guard station outside and inside, roaming guards throughout the building, bullet proof and shaded glass on all windows and doors, and one must pass through a metal detector and sign in to get to see anyone in any of the offices.

A) the EPA is NOT going to take away your ‘existing’ woodstove
B) instead, there are monetary INCENTIVES to switch to cleaner-burning woodstoves (or gas stoves)
C) these rules are NOT new… the rules have been around for 23 years (the 1990 Clean Air Act)
D) so keep your stove if you wish (just try to be a considerate neighbor and burn carefully cleanly)
I heat my home with coal. Dirty, filthy, coal. Costs a third of gas.
I would welcome the EPA to come to my home and attempt to stop me from using my stove; my dirty, filthy, coal burning stove.

A perfect example of when there is too much government. Should we ban forest fires? Wood burning is natural. Chem trails and pulp mills are not. Oh hey! Neither are fireworks and military missiles. How about jet engine exhaust?

Fact: there is less pollution now than there was from the 20s to the 80’s.
We now have flex fuel vehicles whose primary exhaust component from E50 corn fuel is carbon monoxide AND acid! Yes ACID! (Why else would it require stainless fuel systems and stainless exhaust pipes? And why would it destroy vehicles that are older than 2012) Healthy breathing that!

Look a wood burning stove can be cooked on as well as being used for heating purposes but so can a fireplace, so living off grid to heat up living room becomes dining room,kitchen AND bedroom when worst comes to worst. I suppose that they think people are really that dumb, desperate times will require desperate measures and you can be amazed at how creative one can get when people are threatened and desperate.
I am a realtor in Oregon and yes this law has been active for about two years. At first I thought well the government is thinking about people’s safety but then my very curious mind thought, “What is really up?”
